Mikey's Moving and Storage Blog

Hello! My name is Mikey and this is my moving and storage blog. I was inspired to start this blog following a move I made from Perth to Melbourne. I had lived in Perth for the past 7 years so I had acquired a lot of stuff. I was dreading the move because I didn't know how I would transport all of my stuff to my new home. Thankfully, a chum of mine recommended a fantastic moving and storage company. The moving contractors helped me to organise and move my things. I really couldn't have done it without them so I decided to start a new blog detailing my experience.

Why Get Your Removalist to Pack Your Antiques?

Miguel Mitchell

If you have some antique furniture that you need to move to your new home, then you already know that these pieces need extra care. Some may be worth money; others may have more of a sentimental value. However, all of your older pieces may be more fragile and easily damaged than new furniture.

You may have chosen a removalist with experience of moving antiques to give you some extra peace of mind that your furniture will be transported safely. However, moving your pieces isn't the only thing to think about — you also need to make sure that every one of your antiques is safely packed up so that it doesn't get damaged.

While you can do this, your removalist may offer a specialist packing service. Why might this be a better option than doing it yourself?

Tap Into Your Removalist's Experience

Although you know that moving antiques needs extra care, you may not be aware of all the things that might happen to a piece of furniture during a move. Your removalist has this experience.

If you get the moving company to pack up and protect antique pieces before a move, then you get more of a guarantee that each piece will arrive at your new home safely. Experienced antique removalists know how to wrap, cover and pack fragile and breakable antiques. They also understand weak points in different pieces that might make them more prone to damage because of their design or age.

So, for example, if you have an antique cabinet with thin spindly legs, then your removalist may know to use padding around the legs to make them less vulnerable. They can also assess if any parts of a piece of furniture can be safely taken apart before the move or whether it needs to be kept intact.

For example, if you're moving an old grandfather clock, some of its parts, like its pendulum, may need to be removed before the clock is moved anywhere. An antiques removalist should know how to do this kind of thing safely.

Get Specialist Packing Materials

Antique furniture is typically safer if it is packed in specialist materials. It's important to use materials that can protect each piece without damaging it. For example, the finish on older furniture may be more vulnerable than you think.

In some cases, it's better to crate up antique furniture to give it complete cover that holds it secure. An experienced antique furniture removalist may be able to supply or make crates and boxes to do this job.
