Mikey's Moving and Storage Blog

Hello! My name is Mikey and this is my moving and storage blog. I was inspired to start this blog following a move I made from Perth to Melbourne. I had lived in Perth for the past 7 years so I had acquired a lot of stuff. I was dreading the move because I didn't know how I would transport all of my stuff to my new home. Thankfully, a chum of mine recommended a fantastic moving and storage company. The moving contractors helped me to organise and move my things. I really couldn't have done it without them so I decided to start a new blog detailing my experience.

Cross Country Moving: To Drive or To Fly?

Miguel Mitchell

It could be said that Australians have a rather specific sense of size and distance. Australia, after all, has a cattle farm that's larger than the entire nation of Israel. And then there is the distance from one side of the country to the other, with a drive from Perth to Brisbane being a whopping 4312 km. When you're facing an interstate move, one of your first thoughts might be whether it's best to drive or to fly. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages, and it's a matter of working out which one is going to be the most practical for you and your family.

The Date of Arrival

Ideally, the actual date you arrive in your new city will be flexible, but there might be a fixed date where certain obligations will kick in, like the date you must start your new job or the first day of school for your kids. This can influence your travel time as in whether you can realistically afford the time it will take to travel by car. If you're able to free up ample time, you could also turn the moving process into a holiday as in taking a somewhat leisurely road trip with your family with multiple stops along the way, arriving in your new city on whatever date you've determined to be the most appropriate.

Your Cars

The matter of your car is something that needs to be considered. It needs to be moved too! If a long road trip isn't going to work for you, you could think of flying to your new city while making other arrangements for your vehicle. Perhaps your partner or spouse could drive, while you fly with the kids. Perhaps you could ask an obliging friend or family member to drive the car there for you before flying home. The car could also be shipped, but this can be rather costly. If you're a two-car household, you might also want to sell one of your cars prior to moving so you don't have to worry about moving two vehicles such a vast distance.

A Strategic Departure

If flying looks to be the best bet, you might want to arrive after your possessions do. Your chosen interstate removals company can set off on their long journey, and you and your family can stay with friends or family for a few days. This is cheaper than paying for a hotel room in your new city, where you might not have anyone to stay with. Once your possessions have arrived and been unloaded, you and your family can board a plane and be in your new city in a matter of hours. You could even ask your removals company if they offer an unpacking service so your new home is more-or-less set up by the time you arrive.

Flying can often be the most convenient option when moving such a great distance, but this convenience isn't always going to result in the best choice in terms of your available time and budget. Coordinate with an interstate removal company and decide with your family what the best option would be for your move.
