Mikey's Moving and Storage Blog

Hello! My name is Mikey and this is my moving and storage blog. I was inspired to start this blog following a move I made from Perth to Melbourne. I had lived in Perth for the past 7 years so I had acquired a lot of stuff. I was dreading the move because I didn't know how I would transport all of my stuff to my new home. Thankfully, a chum of mine recommended a fantastic moving and storage company. The moving contractors helped me to organise and move my things. I really couldn't have done it without them so I decided to start a new blog detailing my experience.

Getting Ready to Move Home

Miguel Mitchell

Moving to a new home isn't a single large task: it's a collection of many different tasks. Some require planning while others require muscle, but all can benefit from a little help. This guide will walk you through some of the steps you'll need to take to get ready for your big day.

Book a removal firm

One of the first things you should do as soon as you know you're moving is get in touch with a removal services firm. Early booking is important because of the need for flexibility. The earlier you book, the more dates will be available for your move and the better chance you'll have of saving money by choosing a less expensive moving date. If you're too close to the date, you may find that the dates you want are already taken, forcing you to alter your plans.

Make an admin checklist

Moving house involves notifying a lot of different organisations. You'll have to change your address on the electoral register as well as on your vehicle registration. If you have children, you'll have to complete the paperwork for their school transfers. Other parties you have to contact could include your bank, your insurers, your utility providers, your doctor and more. At the start of your moving process, make a list of everyone you'll need to notify. Updating this list a little at a time is a great way to feel like you're making some progress toward the eventual move. Even on a day when you don't have the time or energy to pack boxes, you can still cross an item or two off your list.

Prepare and pack

Before you start your packing, decide what you're going to take with you to your new home. Once you've separated out the things you'll be selling, recycling or giving away, take an inventory of everything else. Combine the inventory with a floor plan of your new home to help your removalists know what's going to go where, then pack smaller items in clearly-labelled boxes. You may be able to get packing supplies such as boxes, packing tape and bubble wrap from your moving company.

When packing, you should prioritize the things you're not going to need until after the move; if you follow this method, by moving day you'll be down to just two sets of essential items. The first set includes the things you'll need for the move itself. It could include a tool kit, legal documents, your new house keys, a kettle and so on. The second should include a suitcase packed with the things you're going to need in the period between arriving at your new home and finishing your unpacking: clothes, bedding, toiletries, work supplies and other essentials.

Moving house is an exciting new start, but it can feel like a daunting task. By securing the help of an experienced moving firm and breaking your to-do list down into manageable steps, however, you can take some of the stress out of it.
