Mikey's Moving and Storage Blog

Hello! My name is Mikey and this is my moving and storage blog. I was inspired to start this blog following a move I made from Perth to Melbourne. I had lived in Perth for the past 7 years so I had acquired a lot of stuff. I was dreading the move because I didn't know how I would transport all of my stuff to my new home. Thankfully, a chum of mine recommended a fantastic moving and storage company. The moving contractors helped me to organise and move my things. I really couldn't have done it without them so I decided to start a new blog detailing my experience.

Going to Work Overseas? Tips on What to Take and What to Store

Miguel Mitchell

Moving abroad for work can be one of the most exciting life changes. Such a long-term move represents the opportunity for new grand adventures and a chance to explore new horizons. Although you might be tempted to take almost everything you own with you, the trick to a seamless move is packing light.

Also, since you will not be going permanently, you will need to find a suitable storage facility for your belongings before your bid farewell and board that plane. Here are a few tips on what to take with you, and what to place in storage for safe-keeping.

Take Your Clothes

It is more cost effective to take your clothes than to buy a whole new wardrobe. However, it's important to only pack what you are likely to wear or able to fit in your new home overseas.  Also, this makes for the perfect opportunity to donate the clothes you don't need, especially if you are moving to a new climate or environment.

Store Your Furniture and Large Appliances

Shipping cost can be expensive, and there is a good chance you will spend almost as much shipping an item as it costs to replace it, not to mention other unexpected costs when shipping large items, such as your furniture and large appliances.

If you are not ready to sell that expensive custom couch your family loves so much or the stainless-steel stove that completes your kitchen, wrap everything up and store in a long-term storage unit.

Make sure to take the time and added effort in wrapping and storing your furniture and appliances to make sure everything remains in perfect condition.

Take Your Electronics

Living in a world that is ever so reliant on technology as we do, electronics are a must have when moving to a new country. Although this doesn't necessarily mean moving with your stereo equipment, televisions or printers, it's important to pack essential electronics to avoid loss of entertainment and other hardships.

Make sure to take small but essential electronics such as laptops, camera, adapters, external hard drive, headphones and even ebooks.

Store Your Keepsakes

When it comes to moving abroad, you might be tempted to take your old photos, your great-grandmothers China, and other mementos with you. However, you might want to consider having them professionally packed and stored safely in a storage unit. This way you don't have to get worried about damaging or losing them during transit.

Make sure not to skimp on packaging supplies both while relocating and storing your items to guarantee preservation and longevity of your belongings. All the best on your trip!
