Mikey's Moving and Storage Blog

Hello! My name is Mikey and this is my moving and storage blog. I was inspired to start this blog following a move I made from Perth to Melbourne. I had lived in Perth for the past 7 years so I had acquired a lot of stuff. I was dreading the move because I didn't know how I would transport all of my stuff to my new home. Thankfully, a chum of mine recommended a fantastic moving and storage company. The moving contractors helped me to organise and move my things. I really couldn't have done it without them so I decided to start a new blog detailing my experience.

Tips for Keeping Your Bed Sheets and Blankets in a Storage Unit

Miguel Mitchell

A self-storage unit comes in handy for many different purposes. You can use this extra space to store unused items that you may not need so as to have more space in your home. If you're planning to store blankets, comforters and duvets in a storage unit, there are several important tips you should keep in mind.

Make sure they're clean

The biggest mistake you can make is to store soiled, stained or wet items. This is because such items may gather mould and debris during storage. Wet linens provide the perfect growth medium for mould, which may also permanently stain your sheets.

Before moving your beddings into a storage unit, make sure you thoroughly clean and dry each item. After washing, pack them in a waterproof bag that you can use to carry to the storage unit.

Don't stuff them inside a cramped box

If you're running out of space in the storage unit, you may be tempted to stuff your beddings inside a box with other items. However, beddings need to receive enough air to keep the fabric fresh. Fresh air also reduces the likelihood of mould and stuffy smells from overcoming your precious linens.

Instead of simply stuffing your beddings in one corner, place them on dedicated shelves. You may choose to install extra shelving in the storage unit just for such items. Fold each item neatly and allow enough space for air to flow. Also, make sure the area is dry and free from moisture access. A climate-controlled storage unit may be a good option to consider.

Use clear bags

If your storage unit is exposed to dirt and debris, consider packing your beddings inside a clear, vacuum bag. Such bags keep moisture and dirt away and are designed for the specific materials from which your items are made.

The idea of a vacuum bag is that it's airtight and will protect your sensitive fabrics from external elements, especially in a storage unit without climate control.

Keep them off the floor

Make sure you never store your beddings on the floor of the storage unit. This is because floors may be exposed to moisture, temperature changes, dirt and debris.

You wouldn't want your beddings to become soiled, especially after washing them thoroughly before the storage process. Keep these items on shelves, on top of furniture or even on top of boxes (as a last resort) instead of leaving them on the floor.
